Can Your Tyre Be Repaired? The BS AU 159 Standard
Not all punctures can be safely repaired. British Standard BS AU 159 sets out strict rules that we follow for every repair.
The Tyre Repairable Zone

Repair Criteria Checklist
For a tyre to be safely repaired, it must meet all of the following criteria:
- Location: The puncture must be within the central 75% of the tyre’s tread (the “minor repair area”). Punctures in the sidewall or shoulder cannot be repaired as these areas flex too much.
- Size: The object that caused the puncture must be no larger than 6mm in diameter.
- Tread Depth: The tyre must have at least 2mm of tread remaining (above the 1.6mm legal limit).
- No Previous Repairs: The tyre cannot have been repaired before in the same area.
- No Structural Damage: There must be no damage to the tyre’s internal structure from driving on it while flat.
