Part-Worn Tyre FAQs
Q: Are part-worn tyres safe?
A: When sourced and inspected properly, yes. The key is buying from a reputable supplier who follows strict quality standards. At IQ Tyres, we only stock part-worn tyres with at least 5mm of tread (more than 3x the legal minimum), no structural damage, and from premium brands. Every tyre is pressure-tested and visually inspected. Unsafe part-worn tyres come from suppliers who cut corners—we don’t.
Q: How much tread depth do your part-worn tyres have?
A: All our part-worn tyres have a minimum of 5mm of tread depth, and many have 6-7mm. For context, the legal minimum for driving is 1.6mm, and new tyres typically have 8mm. This means our part-worn tyres offer substantial remaining life—typically thousands of miles depending on your driving style and conditions.
Q: What brands do you stock?
A: We only stock part-worn tyres from premium brands including Michelin, Continental, Goodyear, Pirelli, and Bridgestone. We don’t sell budget brand part-worn tyres because the quality and safety aren’t worth the small price difference. When you buy part-worn from us, you’re getting premium brand performance at a budget price.
Q: How long will a part-worn tyre last?
A: It depends on the tread depth, your driving style, and road conditions. A part-worn tyre with 6mm of tread could last 10,000-15,000 miles for an average driver. We’ll always tell you honestly how much life to expect from the specific tyres you’re considering. Proper wheel alignment and correct tyre pressure will maximize the lifespan.
Q: Do part-worn tyres come with a warranty?
A: Part-worn tyres don’t typically come with manufacturer warranties like new tyres. However, we guarantee that every tyre we sell meets our quality standards at the point of sale. If you discover any defect or issue that we should have caught during inspection, we’ll make it right. We also include fitting, balancing, and a new valve with every purchase.
Q: Can I mix part-worn and new tyres on my car?
A: Yes, but with the same guidelines as mixing any tyres: keep the same brand and model on each axle (both front or both rear matching). If you’re replacing just one or two tyres, we’ll help you find part-worn tyres that match your existing tyres as closely as possible in terms of brand, tread pattern, and tread depth.
Q: Why are part-worn tyres so much cheaper?
A: Part-worn tyres are typically removed from vehicles in countries where regulations require replacement at higher tread depths than the UK, or from vehicles that have been written off for non-tyre-related reasons. Because they’ve been used, they’re sold at a significant discount—typically 40-60% less than new. The lower price reflects the reduced remaining tread life, not inferior quality (when sourced properly).
