Can Your Tyre Be Repaired? The BS AU 159 Standard

Not all punctures can be safely repaired. British Standard BS AU 159 sets out strict rules that we follow for every repair.

Repair Criteria Checklist

For a tyre to be safely repaired, it must meet all of the following criteria:

  • Location: The puncture must be within the central 75% of the tyre’s tread (the “minor repair area”). Punctures in the sidewall or shoulder cannot be repaired as these areas flex too much.
  • Size: The object that caused the puncture must be no larger than 6mm in diameter.
  • Tread Depth: The tyre must have at least 2mm of tread remaining (above the 1.6mm legal limit).
  • No Previous Repairs: The tyre cannot have been repaired before in the same area.
  • No Structural Damage: There must be no damage to the tyre’s internal structure from driving on it while flat.

Our 6-Step Puncture Repair Process

We follow a meticulous process to ensure every repair is permanent, reliable, and safe.

Step 1: Removal & Inspection

We remove the tyre from the wheel and conduct a thorough inspection of the inside and outside to locate the damage and check for any secondary damage caused by the object or by driving on the flat tyre.

Step 2: Preparation

The area around the puncture is cleaned and prepared. The puncture channel is reamed to create a clean, uniform hole for the repair plug to seal against.

Step 3: Plug & Patch

We use a combination plug-and-patch unit. The plug seals the puncture channel from the inside, and the patch is chemically bonded to the inner liner of the tyre. This creates a permanent, airtight seal.

Step 4: Sealing

The patch and plug are coated with a special sealant to ensure a perfect, permanent bond and prevent any air loss.

Refitting icon

Step 5: Refitting

The tyre is refitted to the wheel, inflated to the correct pressure, and professionally balanced on our computerized wheel balancer to eliminate any vibrations.

Step 6: Final Check

The repaired area is checked for any leaks before the wheel is torqued back onto your vehicle to the manufacturer’s exact specifications.

Supplying All Major Tyre Brands

As an independent garage, we can source and fit tyres from any brand to match your vehicle’s specifications and your budget. Whether you need premium performance tyres from Michelin or reliable budget options from Avon, we have the right solution for you. We’re not tied to any single manufacturer, so our advice is always honest and focused on your needs.

A Special Note on Run-Flat Tyres

Due to their unique construction, most manufacturers do not recommend repairing run-flat tyres after they have been driven on with zero pressure. This is because the internal structure may have been compromised, even if there is no visible damage.

At IQ Tyres, we follow manufacturer guidelines and will always prioritise your safety. We will inspect your run-flat tyre and advise if a repair is possible, but in most cases, a replacement will be required.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does a puncture repair take?

A professional puncture repair typically takes around 30-45 minutes, including removing the tyre, performing the repair, and rebalancing the wheel.

Is a repaired tyre as safe as a new one?

Yes. When a puncture is repaired to the BS AU 159 standard, it is considered a permanent and safe repair. The tyre’s speed and load ratings are not affected.

Why can’t you repair a puncture in the sidewall?

The sidewall of a tyre flexes constantly during driving. A repair patch cannot withstand this flexing and would quickly fail, leading to a dangerous blowout.

I used a sealant can. Can you still repair my tyre?

Unfortunately, no. The chemical residue from emergency sealants prevents a permanent repair patch from bonding correctly to the tyre’s inner liner. The tyre will need to be replaced.
